What Is This Thing Called Jazz? African American Musicians As Artists, Critics, And Activists
open our order pageEric Porter
University of California Press, 2002
Paperback. 426pp. b&w illustrations
£15.99

What Is This Thing Called Jazz?Despite the plethora of writing about jazz, little attention has been paid to what musicians themselves have written and said about their practice. And it is this lack that Eric Porter seeks to correct in his creative intellectual history of African-American musicians. He foregrounds the often-ignored ideas of these artists, analyzing them in the contect of meanings circulating around jazz, as well as in relationship to broader currents in African-American thought.

ERIC PORTER is Assistant Professor of American Studies at the University of California.
