Black Music, White Business Illuminating The History And Political Economy Of Jazz
open our order page Frank Kofsky
Pathfinder, 1998
Paperback. 165pp. b&w illustrations
£10.45

Black Music, White BusinessBlack Music, White Business probes the principal contradiction in the jazz world: that betweeen black artistry on the one hand and white ownership of the means of jazz distribution - the recording companies, booking agencies, festivals, nightclubs and magazines - on the other.

Drawing on a wide variety of sources as well as his own experiences, the author brings to light the exploitation to which jazz creators historically have been subjected and the racist contempt with which many industry executives view jazz.

FRANK KOFSKY (1935-1997) was a frequent lecturer on the history of jazz. His other books include John Coltrane & The Jazz Revolution of the 1960s, a companion to this volume.
