The Great Jazz Day Woodford Press, 2000 Paperback. 230mm/305mm. 144pp. b&w photographs £17.50 [CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE]
The centrepiece is the classic group portrait made in front of a Harlem brownstone by Art Kane for Esquire magazine in 1958 featuring 57 of the greatest jazz musicians of the era. Considered one of the most important jazz photographs ever made, it hangs on thousands of walls around the world and is the subject of Jean Bach's award-winning documentary film A Great Day in Harlem. This remarkable photograph and the outtakes and candid pictures shot that day represent an extraordinary cross section of people and musical styles, showing established stars standing side by side with the young challengers of the day, later to become stars themselves. The texts relive that rich period of jazz history and provide biographical information on all the musicians pictured. Also featured is another epic photograph, Trumpet Players in Central Park, a 1962 classic shot for Metronome magazine with twenty-two of the greatest horn players of the day. This book will be a vital addition to any jazz or photography fan's library. |
