Forward Motion From Bach To Bebop: A Corrective Approach To Jazz Phrasing
open our order pageHal Galper
1st Books, 2003
Paperback. 198pp. musical illustrations
£19.50

Forward MotionMost problems playing music can be reduced to difficulties that lay within the realm of mental states of mind such as: perception, conception and attitude. Forward Motion's focus is more on, not only the mere information herein, but the processes involved with learning and applying the information to alter these states of mind. It attempts to achieve the goal of keeping the intellectual aspects of learning how to play within the scope and context of jazz music's oral tradition and the latest scientific discoveries on how the mind, body and emotions function when learning and playing music.

The book recognises that most concepts learned in early childhood musical training are not applicable to adult musical behaviour. Designed for the intermediate to advanced level student, Forward Motion assumes that its readers have been applying outmoded practicing and performing habits long enough so that when corrected they realize their natural appropriateness on an intuitive and emotional level.

The book's most innovative feature is its low-tech Internet computer interactively. After downloading a small plug-in and accessing the book's URL link, the reader can play along with the examples and exercises in their web browser. The examples are cross-platform for MAC or PC, are low memory and load quickly, and the tempos, keys and volume can be adjusted.
