Living With Jazz, Dan MorgensternGathered together for the first time in one long-awaited volume, here are the writings of one of the most important, prolific, and universally admired jazz writers of the twentieth century.

From liner notes and reviews to profiles and extended analyses, all of Dan Morgenstern's most significant work is here, unified by his poised, always generous voice and the extraordinary depth of his knowledge. Morgenstern is both an accomplished critic and a passionate fan of the music - his unparalleled experience and enthusiasm shine through every piece in the collection. He writes with unmatched insight about the work of a broad spectrum of jazz performers, from the most iconic to the most esoteric, finding the essential aspects in the music and artistry of each. He analyses the role of jazz in contemporary culture. And his appreciations of Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Ornette Coleman, and Ella Fitzgerald, among many others, are not only legendary, they transformed the way the music of these artists is listened to and heard.

The enduring brilliance of Dan Morgenstern's writing, comprehensiveness and sheer impact, make this a benchmark in jazz literature. Living With Jazz is an indispensable work - a must-have book for both new listeners and aficionados.

DAN MORGENSTERN was raised in Vienna and Copenhagen and came to the United States in 1947. He has served as editor of Metronome, Jazz, and Down Beat, and has won six Grammy Awards for Best Album Notes. Since 1976 he has been the director of Rutgers University's Institute of Jazz Studies, one of the world's largest archival collections of jazz materials. He lives in New Jersey.

SHELDON MEYER (editor) worked with Dan Morgenstern to assemble and edit Living With Jazz. He was for many years the senior vice president of the editorial division of Oxford University Press, where he established and maintained the most distinguished list of books on jazz ever published. He lives in New York City and continues to edit books for Oxford University Press.
