Written while very busy with Tommy Dorsey, Rich left much of the work to his instructor and friend, Henry Adler.

There are 83 lessons of exercises and rudiments, 21 reading exercises, 10 exercises employing rudiments, 46 advanced rhythmic studies and a list of the most frequently used musical terms. All of the material has been carefully graded as to difficulty.
