book, as the author states, is not a formal biography of John Coltrane.
It is an attempt to understand the ideas and passions behind Coltrane's
music, and an attempt also to place his art in the context of his time.
It traces the development of his music as it moved from hard bop to the
freest jazz, and attempts to explain how Coltrane arrived at this extreme
of expression.
