Who's Who Of British Jazz Second Edition
open our order pageJohn Chilton
Continuum, 2004
Paperback. 416pp
£25.00

In this comprehensive survey, John Chilton brings his world-renowned research skills to assembling the first ever full-length reference work devoted to the biographies of British jazz musicians. In over 900 career summaries he details the work of musicians from every era of British jazz, ranging from those who played professionally before 1920 at the dawn of jazz in Britain, through to today's young stars. Much new information is revealed on the early careers of those who became famous and the chronological listing of events in each subject's life sheds new light on the development of jazz in the United Kingdom.

Thousands of facts are presented here for the first time and some popular myths dispelled. Veteran musicians have been traced, even those who have left the profession or emigrated, and details of their careers are included. The result is one of the most fully documented sources on the jazz musicians of any country outside the USA and a treasury of information covering every style of jazz.

JOHN CHILTON divides his time between being a professional jazz trumpeter (accompanying singer George Melly) and writing books on jazz. He has written the standard works on Billie Holiday, Sidney Bechet, Louis Jordan and Coleman Hawkins, as well as the definitive account of the careers of early jazz musicians. His original Who's Who of Jazz - Storyville to Swing Street has been through five editions since first appearing in 1970. He is one of the few Europeans to have won a Grammy award for writing on jazz and has been dubbed 'a master of the craft of research' by Down Beat magazine.
