ROBERT O'MEALLY is Zora Neale Hurston Professor of American Literature and director of the Jazz Study Group at Columbia University. MILT HINTON is a world-renowned double bass player who has played with Cab Calloway, Bing Crosby, and Louis Armstrong, among others.
