Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz With Guest Mary Lou Williams Conversation And Music As Heard On National Public Radio
open our order pageMary Lou Williams / Marian McPartland
The Jazz Alliance, 2004 (1978)
CD £13.99

The prodigious talents of pianist, composer and arranger Mary Lou Williams helped set the standards for the women's movement in jazz music in the 1930s, 1940s and right up to the time of her death in 1981. Her ground-breaking efforts and bold strokes helped establish women musicians in the historically male-dominated profession of jazz music. It was most appropriate, then, that Mary Lou Williams was the very first guest artist to be recorded for Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz radio programme. Perhaps in a not so subtle way, the success of Marian McPartland and other women in jazz can be attributed to the pioneering efforts of Mary Lou Williams.
