IAN CARR
[ labels : BGO / Spotlite / Harkit ]

Ian Carr played with the Newcastle-based EmCee Five before moving to London in the early-1960s. He formed the Rendell/Carr Quintet in 1963 with Don Rendell, and this group forged a formidable reputation: five studio albums were recorded. In 1969 Carr incorporated electronics in his performance with the seminal jazz-rock group Nucleus. The group won first prize at the Montreux festival in 1970, and intensive touring and recording followed. Nucleus re-grouped and performed sporadically after the mid-1980s, and he has performed with the United Jazz and Rock Ensemble and other groups. Nucleus is to tour again this year (2004).

At the same time, Ian Carr has spent time writing about jazz. His book Music Outside, considered by many to be the vade mecum of modern British jazz and published in 1973, is now much sought after (NOT in print). Carr's biography Miles Davis: The Definitive Biography has been rightly praised. He lectures on jazz history at the Guildhall School of Music.
